I am mad as hell and just cannot take it any longer. We must have heath and healthcare reform, but the LIES MUST STOP! Point in CASE - Alabama. Our PRESIDENT made direct reference to Alabama - he insinuated oligarchy health institutions like Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama are taking advantage of situations and raising the cost of health insurance premium: FACTS he did not tell:
- Alabama has the 5th LOWEST, let me repeat 5th lowest, when it comes to health insurance premiums in the NATION. (2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey)
- Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama is a NON-PROFIT. This is what he is proposing. (Alabama Secretary of State – Business) We need insurance companies to return to their roots of non-profits and mutuals (companies owned by the policy holders)
Hello, what more can he ask for as proof of a system that works. Next we see him switch the number of uninsured without explaining what he has done. Yes, the number now is 30 million down from 50 million. Big swing, when they used the 50 million to get elected and now they say the number is 30 million. How can you believe their numbers now when they misrepresented the numbers in the past? The new number is minus ILLEGALS AND RESIDENT ALLIENS. Wow, glad we got that clear.
This blogger definitely wants REFORM, but only the reform that will help the people of this nation. I an in favor of removing employer sponsored healthcare. (I did not say "employer paid" because the consumer has been paying 100% all along) A consumer centric system of protection that rewards healthy lifestyles is the only plan that will work. More to come on the Cash Doctor "Consumer Centric PLAN".

i do welcome a return to civil discussion of the matter.
rob, whether blue cross/blue shield of alabama controls 75% or 90% of the market, the fact is that they control 2/3 of the state AND they have the local resources in their back pocket. where and who is their free market competition?
and how are they covering people outside alabama if insurance companies can not cross state line. our clients have BCBS of Alabama because they have no other choice ... and as for those razor-thin margins they cite, you might want to check into some of those company perks they're so proud of.
The point I am making is that facts are distorted to move the public to a conclusion that is false. Non-Profits that provide a community service (Just look at our hospital system, I is and was build by non-profits and for that matter churches.) and dominate a market prove to be beneficial to the residents of the state. Yes there should be more and most of this is due to mandates. Mandates prohibit new entrants into the market place just be cause of the cost and the red tape. Make it easier for carriers to enter a market and sell across state lines and you have competition.
The argument regarding company perks is not relevant when you look at the dollars transacting. Corporate culture sucks across the board from Wall Street to Silicon Valley. For that matter, if we want to fix health care we should turn the insurance over to the churches just like our hospitals and I know the Nuns would not take the perks.
